H.E. Dr. Andrij Melnyk
Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ukraine in the Federal Republic of Germany
His Excellency Dr. Andrij Melnyk is Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ukraine in the Federal Republic of Germany since 2014. He started his diplomatic career in 1997 and was appointed as Consultant, Senior Consultant, Chief Consultant (international legal issues) at the Foreign Policy Directorate, Administration of the President of Ukraine, Kyiv (1997-1999). He then served as the Second Secretary and then First Secretary (political and legal affairs) at the Embassy of Ukraine in Austria (1999-2003). He then worked as Chief Advisor for international legal issues at the Foreign Policy Directorate, Administration of the President of Ukraine, Kyiv (2004-2005), thereafter serving there as Deputy Head of Department – Chief of Division (2005-2007). Dr. Melnyk was Consul of Ukraine in Hamburg (2007-2010) and served as Director-General of the Third Territorial Directorate-General (Europe), Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine (2010-2014). Dr. Melnyk served as Deputy Minister of the Cabinet of Ministers (Government) of Ukraine responsible for international affairs and European integration (March-December 2014). Dr. Melnyk holds the diplomatic rank of Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Minister of the First Class.
Andrij Melnyk graduated with honors from the Ivan Franko State University of Lviv in 1997, specializing in in International Relations and as Translator of German language (equivalent to MA in International Politics). He also studied international law at Raoul Wallenberg Institute of Human Rights and Humanitarian Law, Lund University, Sweden (1996-1998), graduating with Master in International Human Rights Law (LL.M.) and took part in the Ukraine’s National Security Program at the John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University, USA (1998). Andrij Melnyk carried out his Doctoral studies at the Department of International and Comparative Law, Volodymyr Koretsky Institute of State and Law, National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Kyiv. (1999-2004), defended his doctoral thesis in International Law and was awarded scientific title of Candidate of Juridical Sciences (equivalent to Ph.D. in Law or Dr.iur.) in 2004. Since then, he is a freelance Research Fellow at the International and Comparative Law Department, Volodymyr Koretsky Institute of State and Law, National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Kyiv. He also served as Adjunct Professor, Senior Lecturer in International Law at the International Law Department, Ukrainian Academy of Foreign Trade, Kyiv.
Andrij Melnyk was born in 1975 in Lviv, is married to Dr. Svitlana Melnyk, has a son and a daughter.
