Welcome to the History Department of the Institute for East European Studies at the Freie Universität Berlin!

Here you will find information about our courses, our team, and our research projects.

We focus on the history of Eastern and East-Central Europe in the 19th and 20th centuries. Our primary interest lies in the history of the Russian Empire and the Soviet Union from a global historical perspective. We are particularly interested in transnational connections. Our colloquium, which all interested parties are warmly invited to attend, serves as the central venue for academic exchange and discussion.

The History Department is headed by Prof. Dr. Robert Kindler.
