Book talk with Nadejda Podzemskaja (Paris): Kandinsky's "Concerning the Spiritual in Art"
Kandinsky's study On the Spiritual in Art has been one of the key texts of modern aesthetics since its publication in 1911. Yet it has remained virtually unknown that Kandinsky's German text was written in close dialogue with Russian versions. In 2020, after years of archival research, Nadejda Podzemskaja will present the first complete new scholarly edition of On the Spiritual in Art, in which the three previously unknown Russian versions from 1910, 1913/14 and 1919/21 will be made accessible in all their variants parallel to the German edition.
In the book talk, Nadejda Podzemskaja will explain how Kandinsky's writing can be read anew in the light of the Russian variants. This concerns not least the dynamics of the relationship between Kandinsky's theoretical and painterly work.
Nadejda Podzemskaja is a research associate at the Centre national de la recherche scientifique in Paris.
The discussion will take place via Webex. Access data and preparatory materials can be obtained from Halina Zeman-Castillo.
