As a sign of solidarity with Ukraine, the ifs is showing films related to the war in Ukraine in its series »ifs Encounters« #standwithukraine.
The dystopian drama »Atlantis« premiered at the Venice International Film Festival in 2019 and was awarded Best Film in the Horizons series. »Atlantis« was also the Ukrainian entry for the 2021 Academy Awards.
The film is set in 2025 in eastern Ukraine, which is completely destroyed after a devastating war with Russia. In masterfully constructed tableaux, the director follows a lonely hero. Sergey, a former soldier suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, has difficulty adjusting to his new reality – a life in ruins, a country in ruins. He joins a group of volunteers who use forensic meticulousness to recover the bodies left behind from the battlefields. There he meets Katya – and a better future suddenly seems possible.
ATLANTIS anticipates an ecological and human catastrophe, against which it simultaneously calls for protest with aesthetic thrill. (Barbara Schweizerhof, Viennale)
