Lecture and discussion with Anna Dziapshipa (filmmaker from Tbilisi) as part of the seminar "Flight, Trauma and Memory in Georgian Literature and Film" (led by Irine Beridze)
In the lecture, filmmaker, visual artist, producer (Sakdoc Film) and founder of "The Abkhazian Virtual Archives" (AVA) Anna Dziapshipa will talk about her artistic practice. Using a variety of media (photography, film, text), Anna Dziapshipa intensively explores questions of national identity, the border, and the loss of home. In 2023, her first feature-length documentary "Avtoportreti Zghvarze" (international title: SELF-PORTRAIT ALONG THE BORDERLINE) will be released.
Synopsis: "The director takes us on an ambivalent journey to understand her identity and offers a new perspective on the meaning of roots. When she finds her abandoned summer home in Abkhazia, 25 years after she left it, a 'Pandora's box' of violent yet cherished memories opens.... The highly personal narrative explores the complexities of nationalism and identity in times of war and global displacement. Ultimately, these reflections on recent history become a possible guide to what may come when the wars are over.
