The introductory lecture will be held by Prof. Miklós Szanyi, who is professor at Szeged University, Faculty of Economics and Business Administration. He is also research adviser at the Institute of World Economics in Budapest. He has a long standing research interest in the microeconomic aspects of Central European transition. The main topics of him have been privatization, FDI, innovation. Most currently Prof. Miklós Szanyi does research about the historic determinants of alternative development paths of post-communist countries.

In this seminar, Prof. Miklós Szanyi would like to talk mainly about the Hungary where, according to him, populism and pragmatism go hand in hand: the populist government pays attention to macroeconomic balances and promises economically feasible and politically good looking changes in taxation and social transfers. On the other hand, inequality grows, the strata of the society that would need solidarity cannot really change its status. The economic policy decision making is myopic. There is a steady deterioration of institutional quality and also competitiveness.
