JourneyOfAkaki

Lecture and Discussion with Giorgi Gabelia

The first Georgian film production was the documentary "Journey of Akaki" in 1912. Independent Georgian cinema existed for 9 more years until the country became part of the Soviet Union in 1921. How did Georgian auteur documentary cinema survive in the Soviet Union? How did the film-auteurs coexist with Soviet propaganda? These were the main topics of the lecture. (Caméra Stylo* - French theoretical phrase that describes the camera as if it were the director's pen.)

Giorgi Gabelia is a PhD candidate in sociology and a film scholar at the Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University. The main areas of his research are: Aesthetics of Soviet cinema, history of Georgian cinema, cinema and everyday life, cinema and politics.
